A ‘Ribbon Cutting’ for the completed SR 116 and Cedar Avenue Pedestrian-Bike Improvements Project, WSDOT Safe Routes to School Program, will take place on Wednesday, July 6th at the east end of the new Multi-use Path at Cedar Avenue.

The purpose of the SR 116 and Cedar Avenue Pedestrian-Bike Improvements Project was to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling along Cedar Avenue and to encourage students to walk and bike to the Chimacum Creek Primary School campus.  Additionally, the Multi-use path was designed to provide a connection to the existing Bike Shelter on the school campus.

Interconnected parks, schools, and communities are key to the County’s non-motorized transportation plans. This project is one step in a trail network that will eventually connect the Port Hadlock and Chimacum core areas, the Chimacum Schools, Bob Bates Ballfields, and H.J. Carroll Park.  The first step was construction of the pedestrian facilities along SR 19 at the Chimacum Safe Routes to School project completed in 2016.

Project improvements included new concrete sidewalks and bicycle lanes along Cedar Avenue and ADA pedestrian crossings, a new paved Multi-use Path from Cedar Avenue to the Chimacum Creek Primary School campus, a concrete sidewalk from Cedar Avenue to the Jefferson County Library, a relocated Jefferson Transit bus stop, pedestrian lighting along Cedar Avenue and the Multi-use Path, and pedestrian activated flashing beacons on SR 116 at the entrance to the Chimacum Creek Primary School.  Jefferson County Public Utility District relocated overhead utility lines to new underground facilities and installed the pedestrian lighting as part of the overall project.

The project was completed by the Jefferson County Department of Public Works. The cooperation of numerous stakeholders contributed to the success of this project including, the Washington State Department of Transportation, Jefferson County, Chimacum School District, Jefferson County Library, Jefferson Transit, Jefferson County Public Utility District, and project consultant Clark Land Office.

Contractor Interwest Construction, Inc. completed the project construction at the beginning of June. The project was fully funded by a Washington State Department of Transportation, Safe Routes to School Program grant of $880,300.

The SR 116 and Cedar Avenue Pedestrian-Bike Improvements Project Ribbon Cutting will begin at 10:00am on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.  Interested participants should park their vehicles in the Chimacum Creek Primary School parking lot and walk (or bike) to the east end of the new Multi-use Path at Cedar Avenue, between the Jefferson County Library entrance and the Jefferson Transit bus stop.  Persons requiring closer access may park in the Jefferson County Library parking lot or be let off at the Jefferson Transit bus stop.
