Port Townsend – Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) has released a Water Quality Report for the Anderson Lake Management Plan project. This report is the culmination of one year of monitoring the water conditions that lead to harmful algae blooms. Anderson Lake has had a toxic algae bloom every year since at least 2006, resulting in seasonal closures and several dog deaths. The report describes how nutrients, such as phosphorus, cycle in the lake, and summarizes some treatment options that could help break the cycle. The report, prepared by Herrera Environmental Consultants, is available on the project website at A public presentation on the report will be held online in late June. A link to the virtual meeting will be published on the project website at the same link as above, once the exact time and date are decided. JCPH is in the process of completing a Lake Management Plan for Anderson Lake to determine potential strategies for mitigation.
A bloom of cyanobacteria is currently producing the potent nerve toxin anatoxin-a in Anderson Lake and the State Park remains closed. Contact with the lake water should be avoided. To check the status of Jefferson County Lakes and learn more about toxic cyanobacteria monitoring, consult the JCPH website at or call (360) 385-9444.
