Jefferson County, WA. Several Jefferson County recreational shellfish beaches are re-opening for most species of shellfish. Recent samples indicate that the levels of biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) have dropped below the closure limit, except in butter and varnish clams. The Washington Department of Health has removed all-species closures on the Quimper Peninsula from the entrance to Discovery Bay to Point Hudson, and in Admiralty Inlet south to Port Ludlow, including Kilisut Harbor, Mystery Bay, Oak Bay and Mats Mats Bay for recreational shellfish harvesting. However, there is still a closure to harvesting butter and varnish clams due to their higher levels of biotoxin. Jefferson County Public Health has posted signs at public access points indicating this change.

To find out which areas are safe to harvest shellfish in Washington and the WDFW harvesting rules, please check the map at or call the Biotoxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632. For the latest information on regulations and seasons, visit the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife website at or call the Shellfish Rule Change Hotline at 1-866-880-5431.
