PLEASE NOTE: All visitors of the County Courthouse will be subject to screening via magnetometer, and all personal items will be subject to X-Ray search. All weapons of any kind (including folding pocket knives) are prohibited in the courthouse. Weapons or other illegal items discovered during screening may be subject to seizure, and may result in criminal charges.
The Civil Unit is supervised by the Chief Civil Deputy, and carries out the Sheriff’s statutory responsibilities to the courts.
In addition to serving process throughout the county, the Civil Unit enforces a wide variety of court orders, including Evictions and Sheriff Sales; provides a security presence at the county courthouse; and attends all sessions of District and Superior Court.
Court SecurityThe county courthouse is located in Port Townsend, at 1820 Jefferson Street, and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The courthouse currently houses the offices of the Auditor, Treasurer, Assessor, Board of County Commissioners, District Court, Superior Court, Prosecutor, Juvenile Court Services and the Sheriff.
The Sheriff's Office provides armed security for all courtroom hearings and trials, as well as a security presence throughout the courthouse and on the court grounds. Each court is in session at least 4 days each week.
RCW 9.41.300 prohibits any type of weapon in the building. Weapons lockers are provided for convenience on the northwest side (Cass Street side) of the courthouse, near the flagpole.
Everyone is subject to a search of person and belongings when entering the courthouse and/or any courtroom.
Beginning January 22nd, 2018, all persons coming to the second or third floor of the courthouse will be subject to search via magnetometer, and all personal items will be searched via X-Ray.
