Flooding of the Hoh River washed away the river bank adjacent to the Upper Hoh Road – in some places to within less than a foot away from the road. The river bank that remained after flooding was unstable.

Building the base of the revetment with boulders 3ft-6ft in diameter. The rock revetment will protect the river bank and the road from the erosive action of the water.

Smaller rock, 1.5ft-3ft in diameter is placed on top of the base. The revetment will be completed in the spring when a layer of reinforced soil will be applied over the rock and then replanted with willows.

In March 2007, the road embankment was rebuilt in consecutive layers using bioengineered techniques. Each 2 ft – 3 ft thick layer of soil was wrapped with an erosion control blanket and willow cuttings were placed between the layers.

The erosion control blanket will biodegrade over time and the willow roots will form a dense mat that will help to hold the embankment in place.

On April 17, 2007, three weeks after completion of bank reconstruction, willows and grasses begin to sprout.
