TIP Background

Washington State law requires the annual adoption of a six-year transportation improvement program (6-yr TIP) after a public hearing. The purpose of the law is to "assure that each county shall perpetually have available advanced plans looking to the future for not less than six years as a guide in carrying out a coordinated transportation program" (RCW 36.81.121(1)).

The TIP is a list of capital transportation projects that Jefferson County Public Works anticipates undertaking in the corresponding six-year period. The list includes secured and anticipated funding sources for each project. The adopted 6-yr TIP is used for developing the annual construction program budget each year. The County provides information on Federally-funded projects to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) for the purpose of developing the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

Projects are selected by a variety of methods, including evaluation of needs and potential solutions through priority arrays for road segments, safety concerns, active transportation, bridge conditions, gravel roads, culverts, and fish passage.
