Summer 2011

PROJECT UPDATE:
Bidding in July 2011 did not result in an acceptable bid.  The project is currently under review on how and when to move forward.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:
This project was first conceived during a structural evaluation in 2004 by Degenkolb Engineers.  This report looked at the top four structural hazards in this National Historic Landmark.  The rehabilitation of the upper part of the Clock Tower was the most severe hazard, and that work was completed in 2007.  The second most severe hazard in the facility is the structure of the main roof of the Courthouse.  It is at risk in a moderate or greater earthquake.  The existing slate roof was installed in 1994.  Structural upgrades were carried out that that time.  The existing slate roof is to remain during this project, but some repairs of the slate will be needed which are ancillary to bracing of a chimney on the north side of the building.

The scope of this project includes but is not limited to stabilization of a masonry chimney at the north side of the building.  Also rehabilitation work to built in copper gutters (and drains) to curtail water intrusion.  Some work will require access to the interior of the building.  This work will be done on a fully occupied building with active Courtrooms.  The building is located within a residential neighborhood.

This work is only one increment of the total needed to rehabilitate the structure of the main roof.  Our funding for construction is a Historic Courthouse Rehabilitation Grant, from the Washington State Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation, through the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation.

Port Townsend is located at the Northeastern most corner of the Olympic Peninsula, and can be reached via US 101, the Hood Canal Bridge (SR 104), and via the Port Townsend Ferry from Whidbey Island.
