Project Overview Presented to Regional Planners
An overview of the SMP Comprehensive Update project was presented
to attendees of the Olympic Peninsula Planners Forum on July 18 at
Fort Worden. Planning professionals from Jefferson, Clallam,
Mason, Kitsap Counties and associated cities comprised the bulk of
the audience. All jurisdictions in Washington are required to
update their SMP by 2014. View the slideshow presentation as a

SMP Comment Form and Open House Series
Throughout October 2007, the SMP project again visited locations
around the County to inform and involve interested citizens and
stakeholders. The Comment Form
and more information are in the
SMP Open House Series section
below.

Direct Mailings
Because public involvement in the SMP Update project is of utmost
importance, shoreline property owners have been notified by direct
mail on several occasions as a courtesy to inform them that the
lengthy process was underway and to publicize important project
dates/events. Materials are sent via US Postal Service to over
3,000 addresses from the Assessors Office records as determined by a
GIS mapping query for parcels in shoreline jurisdiction. When
a person owns more than one parcel, duplicates are removed.
There is no legal or contract requirement for such landowner
notification, rather this public outreach action was made as a good
faith effort to maximize public participation. View the direct
mail materials below:

Public Events
Community Planning
Workshop July 10
The Community Planning Workshop (formerly called
the “shoreline charrette”) was held at the Inn at Port
Hadlock (310 Hadlock Bay Rd, Port Hadlock) on Thursday, July
10 from 9:00 am to 8:30 pm. The purpose was to gather broad
community input and build support for the Preliminary Draft SMP
prior to its submittal for Planning Commission and formal public
review starting this Fall.
While this SMP event was not held as a full charrette, similar concepts and components
were incorporated. What is a "charrette" anyway?

community solutions.

SMP Road Show
March 12 – 15, 2007: A series of public meetings were
delivered around the County with stops in
Chimacum, Port Ludlow, Brinnon and Clearwater. Each event followed
the same agenda including an open house of informational displays, a
slideshow lecture and an audience participation activity. Nearly 130
citizens attended overall to learn more about the status of this
project and provide input during this early staff-development phase
of a draft SMP proposal. Summary
notes are in preparation and will be posted on this webpage.

nearly 150 participants in sessions including a keynote address about
climate change, an overview of shoreline planning basics, a public
visioning workshop, a joint committee meeting and an educational
course for property owners.
