Trip permits allow an unlicensed vehicle to be operated for three consecutive days at the maximum legal weight limit for that vehicle.

Trip permits may be used to:

  • Move an unlicensed vehicle.

  • Increase the load license to the maximum legal weight limit (up to 40,000 pounds for a single unit or 80,000 pounds for combinations). The vehicle MUST be currently registered & have a current gross weight license.
  • Change use class from Farm to Combination for one to three days.
  • Vehicles using trip permits are subject to all laws, rules & regulations affecting the operation of like vehicles in this state.

Three trip permits may be used per vehicle in any 30 day period.

No more than two permits may be used for any recreational vehicle in a one year period.

Recreational vehicle means a vehicular-type unit primarily designed for recreational camping or travel use that has its own motive power or is mounted on or towed by another vehicle.  The units include travel trailers, fifth-wheel trailers, folding camping trailers, truck campers and motor homes.
